This complaint is very common and is most likely caused by benign MSK causes. Because of frequency bias it is very easy for providers to miss those subtle findings which can indicate a serious cause of the patient’s back pain. There has been an increase in the incidence of spinal epidural abscess. Case review shows that most patients have been seen and treated 3-4 times before the correct diagnosis is made. We will also be discussing malignancies and cord compression.

Providing for children’s basic needs, safety, education, and health care is a source of constant concern for parents.  We, as medical providers, are often neglectful of these fears, and some providers, will outright ignore them all together (Sarwick, 2004).  This neglect could be potentially fatal to a child if the provider is assessing the patient through this negative mind set.  This presentation will help providers have greater understanding of pediatric patients, their physiological differences, and special considerations in treating emergent medical injuries and illnesses.
