Rheumatoid Arthritis Update 2025
An estimated 1.3 million adults have rheumatoid arthritis (RA). During the last two decades, advances have been made in the understanding of the pathophysiology of this condition. This increased knowledge lends itself to improved diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory arthritis. With these medical science advances, social determinants of health continue to affect persons with RA. Updated classification criteria for RA support the importance of early identification of those with this rheumatic disease. Biologics are important pharmacologic tools that can be used with traditional Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) for appropriately selected RA patients. Updated RA treatment guidelines were published by the American College of Rheumatology in 2021. An RA integrative treatment guideline was also published in 2023. This session will provide an update on the latest diagnostic and treatment options for rheumatoid arthritis to aid the non-rheumatology PA in providing care to persons with RA.

Young People, Bad Backs: Understanding Inflammatory Back Disease
Back pain is a common reason that persons seek medical care. Several etiologies of back pain exist, including mechanical and pathological. Inflammatory back pain is also common and is often overlooked when persons present with back pain. Don’t Hold Your Breath: CPAP Alternatives for Sleep Apnea Treatment
While CPAP therapy remains the most common treatment option offered to sleep apnea sufferers, it’s not always an ideal or realistic therapy. This lecture aims to increase awareness of mask-free alternatives while providing insights on their mechanism of action, appropriate candidate selection, contraindications, and monitoring for therapeutic benefit. Current research on future potential pharmacologic options for the treatment of sleep apnea will also be discussed.

Cognitive Bias: How Do We Rethink How We Think?
Cognitive bias is pervasive in clinical practice and is implicated in hundreds of thousands of medical errors in the United States annually. Cognitive biases, or heuristics, are mental shortcuts that impact medical decision-making. This presentation is designed to help PAs reduce misdiagnosis by recognizing and limiting the effects of cognitive errors in clinical practice. Attendees will learn about the errors our minds make when evaluating patients, analyze how errors may have contributed to problems in past cases, discover methods to decrease cognitive error and misdiagnosis in our practice, and apply this knowledge and skill to future encounters. In both the main presentation and interactive case reviews, attendees will identify cognitive contributors to misdiagnosis and form an appropriate preventive response for use in future patient care.

The 3 Amigos: Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic Disease Cases
Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality for Americans with CKD as the most common cause of morbidity. One person dies every 33 seconds from CVD and someone’s kidneys fail every 5 minutes. In the spirit that acknowledges the interconnectivity of the heart, kidney and metabolic milieu in which they exist, the 3 largest internal medicine groups have banded together to identify and stage Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Disease. With the cost of each organ system (25% of all Medicare dollars go to CKD + heart disease costs $240 billion each year), it is vital to slow the growth of CKM disease. Presently, more than three-quarters of US adults have stage 1 to 3 CKM syndrome. CKM is more common as we age, with 98% of adults over 65 y/o staged with CKM. Using case studies, we will identify, stage and intervene and slow progression of the CKM patient. All this is with the hope of slowing the crisis of CKM; especially for those patients with social determinants of health complications
